Something is Not Nothing

A.W. “Grandad” Copeland was my great grandfather and one of the kindest and gentlest men I ever knew. Most kids don’t get the opportunity to know their great grandparents all that well, but I had twenty-one years with Grandad befor...

Nurture or Neglect

“Christianity is not a religion; it is a family, a Father and His children.”   – EW Kenyon God is all about family. The creation of Earth and man were about His overwhelming desire for fellowship, relationship, and closeness with us...

Life In The Fire

Why am I crying? I thought to myself as I stared into the bonfire flames that reached high into the sky. The entire student body had gathered that autumn night on the soccer field. Under the leadership of the senior class, we were invite...

Get Your Own God

It was 1986, and I was only three-years old. I don’t remember a lot about that year other than my mom’s giant rockstar hair, her sweet smile, and my very first moment with Jesus. I loved to sit in my room inside my little, plastic pl...

The Good Fight

I’ve never been in a fist-fight. As a dude, I don’t know if that’s something to be embarrassed or proud of, but nevertheless, it’s the truth. I have, however, been punched a few times: once by a kid in high school who I had overl...

The Faith Frequency

In high school and college, I worked as a deejay at a Christian radio station owned by my church. I so clearly remember sitting at my desk with my oversized headphones speaking to our radio audience: “You’re listening to KMTC 91.1 FM...

Let’s Eat

I’ve always been somewhat of a foodie. I like food. I enjoy eating and look forward to a good meal with my family. Some of my favorite memories are at the dinner table with people that I love, especially those meals at Thanksgiving and C...

Prepare For Takeoff

I began learning to fly airplanes as a senior in high school, and while most young people that age would jump at the opportunity to learn to fly, I only started taking lessons because my grandfather (who was then and is still a high-time...

In Perfect Harmony

Have you ever heard a symphony orchestra warming up just before a show? The sound of chaos and discord echo throughout the auditorium as the musicians loudly tune their instruments all at the same time. Sounds of disorder fill the air un...

Friend Request

Recently, while preparing for a Sunday message, I began searching my heart and the Scriptures, listening and looking for direction. It all seemed to be coming to me a little slower than usual. The first hint of direction came shortly bef...

A Life Abiding

I never again want to see the look I saw in the eyes of my precious little girl the night she suddenly came under attack from a sickness that made it difficult for her to breathe. She’d completely lost her voice, too, but she didn’t ...

Secret Petitions

“This story will make you believe in God.” That is what Jeremy and I tell people who ask us how we first met. It was the summer of 2006. I was twenty-three and living in Branson, Missouri. For some reason, I had the desire to attend ...

The Art Of Contentment

As the summer of 2015 approached, we knew it was going to be one for the family record books. What I didn’t know, however, was how much it would test my character, my contentment, and, on some days even, my Christianity. On June 1, we ...

The Adventure Club

As a kid I craved adventure. There was nothing more exciting than following a handmade map to find a treasure buried deep in the backyard. My brothers and I spent countless hours exploring the woods that surrounded our house, searching f...

It’s All A Big Show

What You See Is What You Get

Many of us have become accustomed sitting in services, hearing sermons that revolve around steps—the how tos and the 1,2,3s. We want those we admire to give us the secrets to their successes and the quick fixes that will produce change...

“Your opinion matters,” said the flimsy little card that I threw away just after checking out. I get handed these cards every now and then, and I usually look at it and ask, “Does it really?” It would be easy to get the feeling in t...
